3 Ways To Add Self-Care To Your Life During the Holidays (Guest Post)

How do you recharge when you feel like you’re running on 1% of your mental and emotional battery? Consider the following tips for making your home, mind, and social life places of refuge rather than areas of additional stress during the busy holiday season.

1. Make Your Home a Relaxing Oasis

It’s difficult to relax when you feel like chores and responsibilities are piling up around you. A cluttered home is inherently stressful, while a clean, organized home can bring mental peace. Go through your belongings, one room at a time, and make a plan to either organize the clutter or let go of what you don’t need.

Some quick tips include: Commit to a time block to focus on this, keep only what you’ve used in the last year, get rid of duplicate items, utilize storage, and digitize paper clutter

After you clear the piles of paperwork, kids’ toys, and odds and ends you didn’t know you still had, consider whether you’re physically comfortable at home. You don’t have to spend money on a new wardrobe, but you can seek out some nice pajamas or a nice soft blanket.

2. Deal With Negative Emotions

If you’re a business owner, or you work in a role where you have to manage people, you probably deal with a fair share of stress, negativity, and burnout. How do you keep these feelings from affecting your work, the people you work with, and your family?

If you bottle up your feelings, over time, you may find yourself lashing out at those closest to you and wondering why you’re so unhappy. Learning to manage emotions that aren’t positive is a form of self-care. It takes time, and courage, to investigate why you feel bad and take steps to act in a healthier way.

First, focus on meeting your physical needs. Get enough sleep, eat the right foods, and make a point to get some exercise each day. I can’t stress these enough for importance in managing emotions.

Next, address what’s causing your overwhelming emotions. Talk to a mentor, trusted friend or coach to let out negative feelings in a safe space, journal your thoughts, or try stress-reduction exercises like breath work or meditation. In time, your ability to deal with your feelings in a more productive way will allow you to be a better communicator.

3. Spend Time Where You Actually Recharge

You’ve probably heard people proclaim that they’re introverts or extroverts. Introverts typically feel overwhelmed when they socialize too much (but not necessarily because they’re shy). Extroverts tend to feel more relaxed after they’ve spent time socializing with people they enjoy.

It’s more likely that extroversion is a spectrum and that you’re not entirely one or the other, but consider this: Where you feel the most energized matters. If you need to recharge by taking a warm bath, doing something creative or taking a break from technology, do that. If you need to hit the town with your five closest friends to feel like you’re running on a full battery, call them up and set the date.

It may be difficult to find time for self-care during the holidays, but remember that you don’t have to devote hour-long stretches to these activities, sometimes it only takes a few minutes to ground yourself. I encourage you to take some time to learn how you recharge best and customize your self-care plan around those ideas.
