What happens when a high performer believes their own health story… and everyone else stays silent
High performers are often the worst at spotting their own blind spots…especially when it comes to health.
You can crush it in business, lead your team, take care of your family…and still be quietly running your body into the ground.
I see it all the time in my mastermind groups.
The people who “should know better” often don’t
A number of months ago, I hosted one of my regular mastermind events.
Where entrepreneurs and senior leaders bring their health challenges to the table. Everyone gets a hot seat, and I share what’s got me excited at the intersection of science, tech, and longevity. I talk about the kind of breakthroughs that help you think sharper, recover faster, and show up with the kind of energy that moves your business forward and still have plenty left for your family.
For this session I invited a former mentor, colleague, and friend. I knew he’d struggled with both mental and physical health during COVID. From the outside, the mental side seemed stable… but every time I saw him post on social media, the physical picture told a different story. Not in a judgmental way… just in that quiet, obvious way where you can tell someone isn’t firing on all cylinders anymore.
That’s why I invited him — because I genuinely thought he’d get value from being in a room where we talk about the stuff most high performers brush aside. Not because he “fit a certain category,” but because everyone benefits from looking under the hood once in a while.
When it was his turn, he proudly mentioned that he’d done a biological age test a few years ago (similar to the tests I now use in my Vitality Unleashed program). His result? Fifteen years younger than his chronological age.
He said he felt great. Everything was dialed in.
The BS lie he told everyone, including himself.
Even through a Zoom screen, it was obvious that wasn’t true. His skin’s appearance, his energy, the extra weight…none of it reflected someone aging in reverse.
After the call, others in the group quietly said the same thing:
“There’s no way he’s younger biologically.”
Still, I said nothing.
When I followed up a few days later, I asked if he wanted any resources or insights.
He said, “No, I’ve got it all handled.”
He had specialists on speed dial, high-end programs from top industry leaders, taken tests, had trackers, supplements…the works.
Every box was checked. Every program attended. Every expert consulted. On paper, he believed he was untouchable.
But appearances can be deceiving. All that access, all those resources… didn’t necessarily mean he was truly optimized. And that’s the lesson I wish I’d spoken up about sooner.
But…I let it go.
Six months later, he was rushed to the hospital: blood pressure and heart rate spiking dangerously. It scared him and his family enough to finally take his health seriously.
Nutrition, training, sleep: he finally made it a priority. Thankfully, he recovered.
But that moment stuck with me.
I almost killed my mentor…by doing nothing
Because I knew something was off. I saw the signs. And I stayed quiet because of my own internal story:
“He’s been more successful than me.”
“He was once my mentor.”
“He says he has it covered.”
My silence nearly killed him
I’ll never make that mistake again.
If I see someone heading for a cliff…even if it’s uncomfortable…I’ll speak up. Because sometimes the hardest truth to say… is the one that saves someone’s life.
